breath holding

do you remember when we were life-sized and skipping in the park?
when our hair clung to our popsicle-stained cheeks?
we had joy by the fistful.
we had air under the soles of our feet and laughter
under our rib bones.  we still have
each other and a whole color wheel of life
now my pockets are full of goldfish with tight
bellies and big lips.
all my life in their gills.
